NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service has unveiled a new limited edition “forever” stamp commemorating the Coast Guard’s 225th birthday and its role in protecting the nation.

The Postal Service hosted a ceremony Friday in Newport, Rhode Island, with the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle. The tall ship is visiting Newport.

The stamp showcases the Eagle and a Coast Guard rescue helicopter. Fifteen million stamps went on sale at post offices nationwide this week.

Capt. Matt Meilstrup, the Eagle’s commander, says it’s an honor to partner with the Postal Service. He says the stamp commemorates 225 years of Coast Guard heroes.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island spoke at the ceremony. He says the stamp is a fitting tribute to the men and women of the Coast Guard.
