BOSTON – The State House filled with traditional Judaic music Monday as a giant 18-foot-high menorah stood over the joyous crowd. “Oseh Shalom,” sung by local students of the Schechter Day School, brought the message of peace to an appreciative audience.

Gov. Charlie Baker joined House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Senate Majority Leader Harriette Chandler of Worcester and Rabbi Rachmiel Liberman of Congregation Lubavitch Synagogue as they rode a scissor lift to reach the lights of the huge menorah.

On Sunday, the first night of Hanukkah, a jubilant celebration took place in Downtown Crossing at Washington and Summer Streets, where Mayor Marty Walsh joined U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy, Yehuda Yaakov, Israel’s consul general for New England, and Rabbi Liberman to light the 15-foot-high golden menorah placed there.

Real flames were lit by the Mayor and Warren as the U.S. Navy Band played a selection of Hanukkah music.

“Lighting this menorah here in the heart of Boston is much more than the beginning of the holiday, as it’s about building bonds between the communities of Boston,” Kennedy said.

Earlier Sunday, Baker and Yaakov presided over the lighting of another oversized menorah, this one in Copley Square.
