BOSTON – While you’re out doing any last-minute shopping today, if you happen to think about those who aren’t lucky enough to have presents or a home of their own, take heart – there’s a way to help them right away, and it only involves taking a ride.

Just for today, users of uberPOOL, a new carpool option offered by the Uber ride-sharing service, can help raise money to aid the homeless in Boston by using the code: RIDEFORPINESTEET.

For each ride taken using the pooling service, in which passengers split fares when they board the same vehicle and are headed in the same general direction, Uber will donate $1 to Pine Street Inn, New England’s largest resource for homeless men and women. The Pine Street Inn, near the Southeast Expressway in the South End, provides services including permanent supportive housing, job training and placement, emergency shelter and street outreach to over 1,600 homeless people each day.

“Uber has made it easy for thousands of Bostonians to contribute to our mission to end homelessness during this important time of the year, as we head into winter and colder temperatures,” Lyndia Downie, the shelter’s president and executive director, said in a statement about the program distributed by Uber. “We look forward to continuing to make an impact on the lives of hundreds of homeless men and women in our community through this partnership into the New Year.”

Donations to the shelter will be capped at $5,000, Uber indicated. To make additional donations or to learn how to volunteer at the Inn, visit its website.

Here’s how to make it work:

  1. Enter code RIDEFORPINESTREET in your smartphone’s Uber app.
  2. Request uberPOOL
  3. Uber will donate $1 to Pine Street Inn on your behalf when you’re picked up.
