LOS ANGELES (AP) — An attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union says federal officials are investigating whether gender discrimination exists in Hollywood.

Attorney Melissa Goodman said Wednesday the wide-ranging investigation into the industry’s hiring practice is being conducted by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.

Last summer, the ACLU asked state and federal agencies to investigate whether discrimination was to blame for the dearth of female directors in the entertainment industry.

Statistics show women accounted for less than 7 percent of directors of top movies last year and about 14 percent of television shows.
