Natural gas customers in the Boston area are now paying more for fuel than their national counterparts, reversing the situation from a year ago.
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers released on Friday, Boston-area customers paid just over $1 per therm for natural gas in June, about 13 percent higher than the national average of 89 cents per therm. In June 2015, local prices were about 85 cents per therm, or nearly 10 percent lower than the national average of 94 cents per therm at that time.
Boston-area electricity prices during June have exceeded national prices in each of the last five years by at least 10 percent. In June, Boston-area households paid 18.8 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity, or 36.2 percent more than the nationwide average of 13.8 cents per kilowatt hour.
At $2.30 per gallon, gasoline prices in the local area were lower than the national average for June of $2.42 per gallon, the bureau reported.
Cost impacts are among a range of factors that state lawmakers are considering as they try to agree on legislation diversifying the state’s energy mix by adding offshore wind and hydropower to the portfolio.
