In the wake of Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepping down, Ohio Rep. Marcia Fudge will serve as the permanent chair of the Democratic National Convention set to take place in Philadelphia, Pa., July 25-28.
The DNC rules committee decided Saturday Fudge would take over following a massive leak of nearly 20,000 DNC emails attempting to derail former Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders’s campaign in favor of presumed nominee Hillary Clinton.
Wasserman Schultz was removed from her speaking roles last-minute and announced Sunday afternoon she plans to resign as DNC chair at the close of the convention Thursday.
Clinton thanked Wasserman Schultz for her work in helping Clinton on her road to securing the nomination following the announcement.
“I am grateful to Debbie for getting the Democratic Party to this year’s historic convention in Philadelphia, and I know that this week’s events will be a success thanks to her hard work and leadership,” Clinton said in a statement, according to CNN.
The relationship between Sanders and Wasserman Schultz has been contentious throughout the primary process. The Sanders camp alleged she was giving Clinton an edge by giving the former secretary of state access to donor lists, and scheduling debates at times that would have given Sanders limited exposure.
Sanders had called on her to step down earlier in the day during an appearance on CNN, saying, “We need a party that reaches out to working people and young people, and I don’t think her leadership style is doing that.”
Wasserman Schultz asserted she will continue her work in helping get Clinton elected in November.
“I’ve been proud to serve as the first woman nominated by a sitting president as chair of the Democratic National Committee and I am confident that the strong team in place will lead our party effectively through this election to elect Hillary Clinton as our 45th president,” she said in a statement.
DNC Vice Chair Donna Brazile will temporarily fill the post through the election once Wasserman Schultz steps down.
