Maine Supreme Court Tosses Ranked-Preference Voting

The Maine Supreme Court unanimously ruled that ranked-preference statewide elections violate the state’s constitution. The measure, which Maine voters approved in a 2016 ballot question, is favored by political activists who support fringe candidates who can’t get enough first-choice votes to be elected but might be able to cobble together enough support to win if second-choice or third-choice preferences were taken into account.
