‘Male,’ ‘Female,’ ‘Gender Non-Binary’ Coming To Driver’s Licenses in Maine

The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles plans to allow people to pick “X” for “gender non-binary” along with male and female.

The change stems from a complaint to the Maine Human Rights Commission filed last year by a South Portland resident who identifies as neither male nor female.

Starting this week, residents will be able to request a sticker for their licenses stating that their sex (male or female) has been changed to X, meaning “gender non-binary,” according to the Bangor Daily News.

Starting in July 2019, the state motor vehicles bureau plans to offer permanent licenses with the three options (M, F, or X).
