Former Boston Red Sox designated hitter Hanley Ramirez’s name came up during a traffic stop that led to the arrest of a man who police say had 400 grams of fentanyl in his car.

But after investigative reporter Michele McPhee reported it, The Boston Globe debunked her report. Or did it?

Evan Lips has a timeline of the story, including what McPhee actually reported and where the case stands now.

Ramirez, meanwhile, is not a suspect in the case, according to sources close to the investigation cited by McPhee and the Globe. Both McPhee and the Globe say the man dropped Ramirez’s name to try to shield himself from police and then contacted Ramirez on FaceTime in hopes he would corroborate the man’s story — but Ramirez didn’t.
