Transgender Candidate Running for Governor in Vermont

February 21, 2018

A 61-year-old biological male now living as a woman is running for the Democratic nomination for governor in Vermont.

Expanding communications infrastructure to rural Vermont and dealing with looming hate groups are among the priorities of Christine Hallquist,  who says being on both sides of the gender divide offers perspective.

“I have a unique experience with women’s issues,” Hallquist told the Burlington Free Press. “As a male I was not aware, unfortunately, of the gender hierarchy.”

A spokesman for LGBTQ Victory Fund in Washington D.C. said the group has not yet decided whether to support Hallquist.

James Ehlers, who runs a conservation group, is also running for the Democratic nomination. The primary is in August.

Vermont’s current governor, Phil Scott, a Republican, is expected to run for re-election to a second two-year term this coming November.
