Troubled Holyoke Asks State Auditor To Examine City Finances

February 17, 2018

The recent city auditor of Holyoke, Massachusetts resigned, saying in an email message he didn’t want to deal with “all the nonsense” from the city treasurer and mayor and suggesting that the city should seek state receivership.

Remaining city officials dispute that suggestion, but Mayor Alex B. Morse welcomes intervention by the state auditor, in part because of a less-than-$10,000 wire transfer the city treasurer made to a scam artist eight months ago.

City councilors are unhappy about the wire transfer, both because it happened and because the city treasurer didn’t tell the city council for eight months. A suspect has emerged in Long Island, New York; the city treasurer, who police say is not the focus of the investigation, has declined to respond to requests for comment, according to MassLive.com.
