Castro Socialism Will Be Goal for Cuba’s New President

Cuba’s new president Miguel Diaz Canel says that he will not be taking Cuba in a new direction. He promises to defend the socialist revolution.

“The mandate given by the people to this house is to give continuity to the Cuban revolution in a crucial historic moment.” said Diaz in his first speech as president.

Diaz succeeds Raul Castro, 86, who remains head of the Community Party in Cuba.

Diaz lavished praised on Raul, calling him the “best student” of his brother Fidel Castro, who ruled Cuba from 1959 to 2008. Fidel Castro died in 2016 at age 90.
