Martin J. Walsh became the first big city American mayor to ask his citizens not to vacation in the Dominican Republic after that country recently threatened to expel some 200,000 people of Haitian origin who were born after 1929, according to WBUR.

State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry (D-Dorchester), a first-generation Haitian-American, joined Walsh in asking residents not to visit the Dominican Republic, which occupies two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Haiti occupies the other third.

In a June 30 rally on the steps of the State House. Dorecena Forry called American tourism a key to Dominican Republic’s economy and expressed hope that the boycott would alter the nation’s policy against Haitians living there. The Dominican Republic says it wants to maintain control over immigration.
