PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) — A new dog park in Rhode Island got some help from a group of land-clearing specialists: goats.

Organizers used a herd of the ravenous ruminants to clear brush from a plot of land in Portsmouth that will eventually be turned over to man’s best friend.

Kim Cipolla tells WJAR-TV (http://bit.ly/1O8OsVJ) the 17 goats ate around the clock over an area about the size of two football fields.

The goats ate everything from poison ivy to thick brush and thorns. They even dug up a buried fire hydrant, perfect for a dog park.

Cipolla says they are cheaper than a bulldozer and construction crew, and environmentally friendly. She says it’s “animals helping animal.”

Now that the goats have finished, committee members are working to complete the job.
