BOSTON – CBS Films and Lionsgate announced that Kevin Bacon will be returning to Boston to star in “Patriots Day,” a film about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Bacon is well acquainted with Beantown films, having previously starred in “Black Mass” and “Mystic River.”

Bacon will play the role of Richard DesLauriers, the Special Agent in Charge of the Boston division of the FBI who oversaw the investigation following the bombings.

“Richard DesLauriers worked tirelessly as one of the key figures in an impossibly sophisticated investigation, and Kevin Bacon possesses the intelligence and empathy to portray him,” said director Peter Berg, according to a “Deadline” article.

Also starring in the film are Boston native Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons, and Michelle Monaghan, among others.

The film is in production in Boston and will open in Boston, New York, and L.A. on December 21, 2016.
