Brexit will give the U.K. “freedom from European [Union] foreign policy constraints to be a force for good in the world,” Conservative MP Conor Burns of Bornemouth West told The Daily Caller News Foundation on Wednesday.

Burns looks at the June 23 national referendum to leave the European Union as, “not just the United Kingdom leaving the European Union,” but rather, “the United Kingdom rejoining the rest of the world.” The British lawmaker believes that Brexit will lend his country, “the agility, not only to negotiate new bilateral trade agreements with the rest of the world, with India, with China, with Australia, with New Zealand, [and] hopefully with the United States too.”

Ultimately the lawmaker does not believe that the U.K. leaving the EU will put the 1998 Good Friday Agreement – which ended sectarian strife in Northern Ireland – at risk. Burns stated that, “the agreements that guarantee the peace in Northern Ireland, are agreements bilaterally between the United Kingdom government and the government of the Irish Republic.” Burns went on to say that, “the European Union does not have a role” in the Good Friday Agreement despite multiple mentions of the EU in the peace treaty. The MP went on to note however that, “it’s [the EU] mentioned in the Friday Accords because we were a member of the European Union when we [the U.K.] signed them.”
