The FBI announced Friday it was re-opening its investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s emails, prompting staffers of the University of Virginia’s (UVA) Center for Politics to reassess the chances that Republican nominee Donald Trump may win the election in November.

“It’s unclear exactly what this all means — it may be something or nothing,” UVA Crystal Ball Assistant Editor Geoff Skelley told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

“Nonetheless, the coverage of it is certain to be overwhelmingly negative for Clinton. Throughout this campaign, the candidate who has been in the news more has tended to suffer in the polls, so it wouldn’t surprise me if that happens here.”

“While it’s hard to imagine this altering the likely outcome of a Clinton victory, it might make the race closer by hurting Democratic turnout and bolstering GOP partisans’ antipathy toward Clinton. Trump will take what he can get at this point,” Skelley concluded.

The University of Virginia’s Center for Politics published an analysis Thursday that predicted a blowout win for Clinton, with 352 electoral college votes with at least a “leans Democratic” ranking. Trump only stood to win 173 electoral votes, mainly in the Midwest according to the analysis.

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton currently has the lead in the Real Clear national head-to-head polling average, earning 47.3 percent compared to Trump’s 42.1 percent — a 5.2 percent lead.
