A veteran reporter for The Republican of Springfield and its web site, MassLive.com, has resigned after satirically claiming in a tweet that the Maryland newspaper shooter dropped a red Make America Great Again hat at the scene.
Conor Berry offered an apology “to all good, hardworking reporters and to POTUS supporters.”
Folks, My 21-year career as a "journalist," a fancy term that makes my skin crawl, frankly, came to a screeching halt yesterday with one stupid, regrettable tweet. Can't take it back; wish I could. My sincere apologies to all good, hardworking reporters and to POTUS supporters.

Berry told The Boston Globe on Friday that his tweet “was a snarky, sarcastic, cynical remark.”
The tweet has since been deleted.
Berry’s most recent stories for The Republican and MassLive.com were about local matters in western Massachusetts, including superintendent evaluations in Ludlow and Wilbraham and budget matters in West Springfield.
He also wrote a story previewing a pro-gun-control march planned to arrive at Smith & Wesson headquarters in Springfield in August. The story quoted six opponents of the march.
