Massachusetts Secretary of State Bill Galvin beat Boston city councilor Josh Zakim handily in the Democratic primary.
Galvin, who has served as Secretary of State since 1995, withstood a stiff challenge from Zakim, who tried to marshal the left-turning Democratic electorate against the long-term incumbent.
But Galvin was leading two-to-one with more than 80 percent of the vote reported early Wednesday morning.
Anthony Amore is the Republican nominee for the November general election.
