State Representative Jim Lyons (R-Andover), the most visible conservative in the Massachusetts Legislature, lost his bid for a fifth term Tuesday night.
Lyons confirmed the result by text message to New Boston Post shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Tram Nguyen, a Democrat, defeated Lyons.
Lyons conceded defeat but said he won’t be withdrawing from the political scene altogether.
“I absolutely loved being a state representative. I loved being able to talk about the pro-life issue and the pro-family issues,” Lyons said in an interview Tuesday night with New Boston Post. “I look forward to the next chapter of my life. I think it’s so important to recognize that what the folks on the Left are trying to do is wrong. We’re not going to give up. We’re going to keep fighting. My wife Bernadette and I are committed to continuing the fight for the values that we believe in.”
Lyons thanked voters of the 18th Essex House District for electing him four times.
“It was an honor to serve as a state representative,” Lyons said.
A spokesman for Nguyen said she got about 54 percent of the vote in the 18th Essex House District, according to Andover Patch.
Lyons was first elected in 2010.
