A Drag Story Hour organization in western Massachusetts participated in 42 events this year.

Drag Story Hour Berkshires touted its achievements recently.

Here is what the organization wrote in an Instagram post:

As we close the book on 2024, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible support from our Berkshire community. Since our launch on March 2nd, Drag Story Hour Berkshires has proudly hosted 42 events, bringing the magic of inclusivity and literacy to thousands of community members across the region. This remarkable achievement wouldn’t have been possible without our 6 talented Storytellers and the generous support of venues, partners, and community members like you.

Support Our Mission. We are deeply grateful for the support that has allowed us to bring joy and inclusivity to so many. As we prepare for the year ahead, we invite you to help us expand our reach. Your donation — no matter the size — will directly support our efforts to provide free and low-cost programming throughout the Berkshires. To make a donation, please clock the link in bio or reach out to us to explore sponsorship opportunities. Together, we can continue to create spaces where every child feels celebrated and seen.

Thank you for being part of our journey in 2024. With your help, we’re excited to make 2025 even more magical!

One example of an event the organization took part in this year:  Drag Story Hour Berkshires held a reading event at Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield on December 14, 2024.

“Storytellers using the art of drag to read books to kids in libraries, schools, and bookstores,” the event description said. “Drag Story Hour captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where everyone can be their authentic selves! Performance begins at 2pm. Free w/museum admission.”

Additionally, the organization held an event at Chesterwood Museum in Stockbridge on June 29, 2024.

“Join Drag Story Hour Berkshires performers Poppy Da Bubbly and Miz Rebel for a celebration of individuality, diversity, and the pure joy of reading!” the event landing page said. “This free event is open to youth of all ages and their adults. Stay after the reading to express yourself through craft activities in Chesterwood’s new Art Lab, hosted by Poppy and Miz Rebel!”

The organization put on a launch event at the Berkshire Pride Office in Pittsfield on March 2, 2024.

“Books, music, drag, dancing, laughing, fun for everyone,” the event description said. It added: “Every child who attends receives a free book!”

Massachusetts Family Institute communications director Mary Ellen Siegler condemned the organization and said that drag queens aren’t appropriate for children.

“Drag queens are adult sexual entertainers and promote diverse sexual and gender identities,” Siegler told NewBostonPost via email. “They should not be held up as role models for children or given a platform to indoctrinate them. Children should be exposed to wholesome material that nurtures their development without introducing concepts tied to adult entertainment or sexual and gender confusion. The Berkshires should not be proud of the fact that they are grooming children.”
