Many Americans Driving High on Weed and Sure They Won’t Get Caught, AAA Poll Says

June 21, 2019

Nearly 15 million Americans say they have driven an automobile within an hour of using marijuana, and nearly 70 percent of Americans thinks it’s highly unlikely a stoned driver will get caught, according to a poll from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Millennials are the most likely group to report having driven under the influence of marijuana, at nearly 14 percent.

People driving while high on marijuana “are up to twice as likely to be involved in a crash,” according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

“Just because a drug is legal does not mean it is safe to use while operating a motor vehicle. Drivers who get behind the wheel while impaired put themselves and others at risk,” the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety said in a written statement.

AAA stands for American Automobile Association. The organization advocates for policies it says will make driving safer.
