American flags hung on a Mass Pike overpass in Newton Corner by veterans with a local America Legion have been vandalized or destroyed three times since they were displayed in honor of Veterans Day.

The incident is being widely reported in media around Boston. The flags were affixed to railings and fencing on the St. James Street Bridge by volunteers of the Sons of American Legion Post 440.

“For a person or persons who are doing this — we don’t know who or how many are doing this — to actually do this to a bridge that’s dedicated to a veteran is disheartening to all of us that someone in our community would do that,” said Richard Spalding, a vice commander at the post, in NBC10’s report
