Anti-ICE Protesters Call Out Homeland Security Employee As ICE Agent
July 18, 2019
Opponents of immigration law enforcement apparently hung a sign naming a Newburyport salon owner’s husband as a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent – even though his wife says he isn’t.
The salon owner saw the sign hanging from a bridge near her salon early Saturday morning, July 13, a day after an anti-ICE rally in the area, according to the Newburyport Daily News.
The salon owner’s husband told the newspaper that he can’t discuss what he does for the federal agency.
The mayor of Newburyport, Donna Holaday, told the Newburyport Daily News the man “does work for immigration” but that he isn’t an ICE agent.
She expressed sympathy for the couple but didn’t sound thrilled about ICE agents.
“I think it’s important to get the message out there that this was wrong — the information was incorrect. Immigration is a very large federal agency … it doesn’t mean that every person is an ICE agent and is going into cities and ripping families apart,” the mayor said, according to the Newburyport Daily News. “I hope people understand this is very hateful and disturbing.”
