Ayanna Pressley Praises Juan Jaramillo Following 19th Suffolk Democratic Primary Loss

March 3, 2021

Revere resident Juan Jaramillo likely won’t be the next state representative from the 19th Suffolk District in Massachusetts, but U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Dorchester) praised him nonetheless.

Jaramillo, the Bernie Sanders-endorsed candidate in the race and a former illegal immigrant, came in second place in the Democratic primary for the special election on Tuesday. He received 30 percent of the vote — 6.2 points behind the winner of the race. Former Winthrop Town Council President Jeff Turco, a pro-life Democrat who supported former President Donald Trump in 2016, won the race with 36.2 percent of the vote.

Even so, Pressley tweeted about Jaramillo once the results of the race came in.

“.@JuanForRep, from day one, you ran a bold, progressive campaign,” Pressley wrote. “You and your staff fought tirelessly and unapologetically for the people of Winthrop and Revere. Our communities and our Commonwealth are better for your leadership and your commitment to service.”
