Bernie Sanders A Major Underdog In Democratic Nomination Odds

March 10, 2020

Bernie Sanders is now a long shot to earn the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination this year, according to FiveThirtyEight.

Prior to Super Tuesday, Sanders was still the favorite to earn the nomination, but as of Monday, March 9. the site gave Biden 14 in 15 odds (93.3 percent) of receiving more than half of the pledged primary delegates. Meanwhile, the web site gave Sanders a one in 100 chance (one percent).

The site also said that neither candidate earning more than half of the pledged delegates is more likely than Sanders getting them (six percent).

Biden received a boost right before Super Tuesday (Tuesday, March 3) when former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar both dropped out and endorsed him. Biden went on to win nine of the 14 Super Tuesday contests.

Then, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who won American Samoa on Super Tuesday and nothing else, also dropped out and endorsed Biden later in the week.

Massachusetts U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren also dropped out of the race last Thursday, but she has yet to endorse a candidate.
