Black Bear Climbs Tree Outside Courthouse In Northampton

May 4, 2023

A big black bear climbed up a tree outside the Hampshire County Courthouse in the city of Northampton, leading authorities to shoot it with a tranquilizer dart and later release it into the wild, police said.

The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, April 30, according to Northampton police.

Bears have been sighted in recent years not only in western and central Massachusetts, but even in eastern Massachusetts.

In Mansfield, 75 miles southeast of Northampton, residents told local police they spotted two black bear cubs on Sunday, April 30, according to The Sun Chronicle, of Attleboro.

Northampton Police say if a black bear shows up in your back yard, try to scare it off by making loud noises “by banging pots and pans, shouting, or using an air horn.” Then remove food in bird feeders, grills, pet dishes, trash, or compost.
