Nick Cafardo, a longtime sportswriter and regular on baseball talk shows, died Thursday, February 21.

Cafardo, 62, collapsed at the Boston Red Sox spring training facility from an apparent embolism, according to MassLive.com, citing The Boston Globe.

“Nick was one of the best people to ever walk through our doors …” said Brian McGrory, editor of the Boston Globe, according to a Globe feature obituary.

Cafardo grew up in Hanson, the son of Italian immigrants. He lived in Plymouth.

He had worked for the Globe since 1989, after being hired from The Patriot Ledger of Quincy on the recommendation of the Globe’s most famous sportswriter, Will McDonough (1935-2003).
