Boston Students To Hold Walkout, ‘Die-In’ Over Guns, School Closings

November 19, 2018

Gun violence and the closing of two public schools are being combined into one protest by students in Boston’s public schools, who are planning to walk out of school Monday afternoon and later hold a “die-in” at City Hall.

Organizers say they “will lay in silence outside of the Mayor’s office and demand” a stop to school closures, more money for public education, public money to employ youths year-round, a violence prevention plan, and “Adequate trauma services for BPS young people as well as communities of color who are forced to witness shootings on their way to get their education.”

West Roxbury High School and John W. McCormack Middle School in Dorchester are scheduled to be closed, which activists say “occupy black and brown children who will be extremely affected by these closures.”

A statement online by organizers also mentions gun violence and homicides.

“These incidents are happening more rapidly and frequently than ever. Are you tired of hearing about meetings with empty promises? Are you frustrated from losing your loved one, your friend? Thoughts and prayers don’t save lives funding does. Enough is Enough!! How much more can communities of color take?!” the statement says.
