Brianna Wu Ends Congressional Bid Against Stephen Lynch

April 30, 2020

Brianna Wu will not be challenging U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch in Massachusetts’s Eighth Congressional District this time around.

The Democrat, who would have been on the ballot challenging Lynch from the left for the second straight time, announced via a Medium post that she would be dropping out of the race because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Suddenly, new questions began to keep me up at night,” she wrote. “How would I feel if someone on my team caught COVID-19 executing our plan? How would I feel if someone on my team died? How would I feel if someone died going to vote for me?”

Wu said she already had met the 1,000-signatures requirement to get on the ballot.

Wu received 22.9 percent of the vote in the September 2018 Democratic primary to Lynch’s 71 percent. Lynch went on to run unopposed in the general election.

Two other Democratic challengers are still in the race, both physicians:  Dr. Robbie Goldstein and Dr. Mohammad Dar.
