Candidate for Selectman Wants To Change the Name of the Office

March 14, 2018

Mike Zullas, who is running for the Milton Board of Selectmen, wants to change the name of the board to make it gender-inclusive.

He proposes it be called “select board.”

“Symbols are important and words matter,” he told selectmen, according to The Patriot Ledger.

The board of selectmen is the executive board of a town in Massachusetts. In most towns it oversees town hall, the police department, the fire department, and the public works department.

The board is responsible for overseeing the town budget and town staff members, as well as implementing measures approved by voters at Town Meeting.

Boards of Selectmen date back to the 1600s in Massachusetts.
