Cape Official Asks If Homosexual Politicians Are ‘Too Self-Absorbed and Self-Centered’ To Represent All Constituents

Ron Beaty, a Barnstable County commissioner, asked a rhetorical question on Twitter that has offended several public officials, including one fellow Republican who called on him to resign:

The Cape Cod Times, which reported the tweet Tuesday night, contacted six politicians (including Republicans and Democrats) and the chairmen of the state Republican Party and state Democratic Party, all of whom condemned it.

Cape Cod has two openly homosexual legislators, state Senator Julian Cyr (D-Provincetown) and state Representative Sarah Peake (D-Provincetown), both of whom expressed disgust with the tweet. Beaty left a voice mail message for The Cape Cod Times saying he wasn’t referring to them or to anyone in particular, but that he “had people make some statements to me in recent weeks, so I thought I’d look for other people’s opinions on the matter.”

Beaty criticized Cyr and Peake in a separate tweet Tuesday, February 19 on Cape shark policy, which Beaty thinks should be more aggressive in protecting people:
