Charlie Baker Leaving Office This Thursday

January 4, 2023

Charlie Baker’s time as governor of Massachusetts ends Thursday, January 5, 2023 — at noon.

The Republican is leaving office after serving as the state’s governor for eight years. He is being replaced by current state attorney general Maura Healey, a Democrat.

Although Massachusetts does not have term limits for governors, Baker chose not to run for re-election in 2022.

A governor of Massachusetts has never served three consecutive four-year terms.

Baker already has a job lined up for when he leaves office. He will become the president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (known as the NCAA) in March 2023.
