Charlie Baker, Who Hasn’t Endorsed Any Republicans, Endorses Richard Neal’s Re-Election Bid

August 27, 2020

Massachusetts Republican Governor Charlie Baker hasn’t given out any endorsements for members of his party in this election cycle.

However, he tweeted in support of U.S. Representative Richard Neal (D-Springfield) on Thursday morning.

Baker supports Neal, a Democrat, who is running against Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse in the Tuesday, September 1 Democratic primary in Massachusetts’s First Congressional District, which covers western Massachusetts.

Congressman Neal has been a powerful voice for all in the 1st District and the Commonwealth is a better place because of his hard work,” he wrote. “I’m looking forward to working with him now more than ever as we fight and come back from this pandemic. Good luck next week, @NealForCongress!”

Neal is the chairman of the powerful U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, where all tax and spending bills in Congress originate, and the top recipient of corporate political action committee money in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Neal’s opponent, Morse, is running to Neal’s left as a supporter of Medicare-for-All, the Green New Deal, student loan debt forgiveness, and reparations. Morse has not offered plans on how he would pay for such programs.
