Charlie Baker’s Friends Like ‘To Give It To Me In A Big Way’ During State’s Sale-Tax-Free Weekend

August 26, 2020

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker suggested that some of his friends think of him as the state’s tax collector.

Baker appeared at a bicycle shop in Belmont to tout the state’s upcoming sales-tax-free weekend, the two days of the year when the state doesn’t charge 6.25 percent sales tax for certain purchases.

“Today we’re here to remind everybody that Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30 is the commonwealth’s annual sales tax holiday,” Baker said during a coronavirus press conference at WheelWorks in Belmont on Tuesday, August 25, reading from a prepared text. “That will be the weekend when no one has to pay sales tax on anything less than $2,500.”

Then he laughed, apparently going off script for a moment.

“I’m chucking because I constantly hear from friends of mine about how much they look forward to having an opportunity to give it to me in a big way on sales tax weekend,” Baker said.
