Chris Sununu Backs Legalizing Marijuana In New Hampshire

May 15, 2023

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu now supports legalizing recreational marijuana.

The Republican, who governs the only New England state where recreational marijuana is not yet legal, wants to see his state legalize the drug. However, without getting into specifics, he said he wants to see his state enact some safeguards.

“You see the poll numbers. Obviously, the vast majority of folks across the state support it,” Sununu told WMUR. “Whether we like it or not, this is probably inevitable in some way or form. So, let’s make sure we design a system that focuses on harm reduction as opposed to profits.”

Sununu’s position strays from Republican orthodoxy as most Republican politicians have opposed marijuana legalization.

The New Hampshire Senate on May 11 rejected a bill that would have legalized marijuana on a 14-10 vote. The New Hampshire House of Representatives on April 16 passed a bill to make marijuana legal by a wide margin — 272-109. Both chambers are controlled by Republicans.
