Concord Prison To Close — Where Malcolm X, Joe ‘The Animal’ Barboza Once Lived

January 24, 2024

The state prison off Route 2 in Concord is slated to close during the summer of 2024 because of declining prison population.

The medium security prison is currently operating at about half capacity, according to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Correction reported by WBUR.

Originally opened in 1878, the prison is currently known as Massachusetts Correctional Institute at Concord.

The prison once housed Malcolm X (1925-1965), who at the time was known as Malcolm Little. As a teen-ager and young man he lived in Roxbury and engaged in burglary and selling drugs. He was sentenced to prison in 1946. He later converted to Islam.

Joseph Barboza (1932-1976), an organized crime hitman known as “The Animal,” also spent time at the Concord prison.
