Coronavirus Emergency Puts Pawtucket Red Sox Final Season In Jeopardy

May 4, 2020

Will the Pawtucket Red Sox play another game ever again?

In the age of the coronavirus emergency, it is a serious question.

The Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox was set to play in its final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket this year before moving to Polar Park in Worcester for the 2021 season. However, all professional baseball leagues in the United States are on hiatus because of the virus, as is construction of Polar Park.

According to Yahoo Sports, Bill Wanless, the head of media relations for the PawSox, said there’s no definitive answer on the team’s fate right now.

“Honestly we don’t know,” Wanless told them. “We are awaiting further word from government and health care officials, as well as decisions from Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball leadership. Until then, we are thinking of all our fans and doing what we can to help the community.”

If the PawSox end up leaving McCoy Stadium for Worcester next year, the 50-year-old facility will be without a permanent tenant.
