Democratic Candidates for Governor Fight Over Who’s the More Pro-Abortion, Anti-Gun

July 7, 2018

Challenger Matt Brown, a former secretary of state in Rhode Island, is claiming that Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo isn’t pro-abortion enough because her administration has allowed six health plans in the state’s Obamacare exchange that cover abortion only in the cases of rape, incest, and life of the mother, as opposed to the one mostly-non-abortion-covering plan that federal law requires.

But Raimondo is now touting her endorsement by Planned Parenthood in Rhode Island for trying to enshrine legal abortion in state law. (Her efforts so far have failed.)

Brown and Raimondo are each playing up praise they recently received from a pro-gun-control organization.

Both are running for the Democratic nomination for governor.

Here’s the lede of the story in the Providence Journal:

“PROVIDENCE, R.I. — While it might appear that Gov. Gina Raimondo and her Democratic primary challenger, Matt Brown, are like-minded Democrats on “common-sense” gun control and a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body, you might not know that from their endorsement war.”
