Democrats Snub Springfield Mayor Over Support for Baker, Opposition To Sanctuary-City Status

February 5, 2019

The Massachusetts Democratic Party isn’t inviting Springfield’s Democratic mayor to speak at the party convention later this year even though it’s taking place in Springfield.

Unnamed sources cited by Politico say Mayor Domenic Sarno’s endorsement of Governor Charlie Baker, a Republican, in the November 2018 election is one reason. Another is the mayor’s veto in December 2018 of a sanctuary-city ordinance approved by the Springfield City Council. (The city council later overrode the veto January 14.)

Party members decided during a meeting Monday, February 4 in Worcester to snub Springfield’s mayor.

The party convention is scheduled for September 14.
