Ed Markey Calls For Expanding U.S. Supreme Court, Praises Al Sharpton For Joining Cause

June 14, 2023

Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network has announced it supports expanding the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Americans have lost faith in the justice system because biased decisions and clear-cut corruption have seeped into the highest court in the land,” said Sharpton, president of the network.

Massachusetts U.S. Senator Ed Markey took to Twitter on Tuesday, June 13 to praise Sharpton for his commitment, calling Sharpton a “longtime advocate for justice and catalyst for reform.”

“With his endorsement, our movement to expand the Supreme Court has gained another powerful voice,” Markey continued.

Some Democrats are frustrated with the current five-member conservative majority on the court, and they hope that by expanding the court’s membership beyond the current nine then a Democratic president would be able to regain a majority of liberals on the court. Democrats are particularly irked by the high court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022 in the Dobbs case, which sent abortion law back to the states, but they cite other cases, as well.

Markey has a history of calling for the Supreme Court to be expanded.
