Gary Johnson Endorses Bill Weld for President

February 10, 2020

Former New Mexico governor and two-time Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson is backing his former running mate for president.

Johnson told Reason Magazine he is supporting former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld for president in 2020.

Although Weld is running in the Republican primary against President Donald Trump, Weld was the 2016 Libertarian Party vice presidential nominee.

Reason got Johnson to clarify his endorsement after a report from Business Insider claimed that Johnson supported U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“I like a lot of what she has to say,” Johnson told Reason. “But my guy is Bill Weld.”

Johnson explained that he likes Gabbard’s non-interventionist foreign policy, which overlaps with the Libertarian Party platform.

The Johnson-Weld ticket received nearly 4.5 million votes nationwide in the 2016 presidential election. Johnson and Weld received 3.28 percent of the popular vote, the most ever for a Libertarian Party ticket.
