Handcuffed Car-Stealing Mexican Illegal Alien Eludes Police Officer in Attleboro

January 15, 2019

A quick-thinking, quick-footed 23-year-old Mexican man handcuffed by a police officer bolted across busy Route 1 in South Attleboro and escaped, police said.

The man, 5 feet 8 inches tall weighing 140 pounds, was stopped around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, January 13 on Route 1 for a traffic violation, according to police.

The man didn’t have a driver’s license and gave an alias. When the police officer discovered that the Rhode Island license plates on the car were stolen, he placed him under arrest and handcuffed him.

“During the search, the officer had to release his grasp from [the suspect’s] arm while attempting to remove something in the suspect’s jeans pocket, the chief said, adding the officer had to use both hands because the jeans were so tight,” according to The Sun Chronicle.

That’s when the man lunged forward and ran across the road, which has two lanes in either direction plus a median. In the darkness the man dodged fast-moving cars, almost getting hit, according to police.

The police officer, whom the chief did not name, had to wait for a break in traffic before he crossed.

“The officer gave chase. However, the suspect was notably fleet of foot,” the police chief said, according to The Sun Chronicle.

Police later learned the man is wanted on a warrant in Rhode Island for stealing a car.
