Historic Massachusetts Church Set Ablaze By Lightning

June 6, 2023

The First Congregational Church of Spencer, which dates from the 19th century, was destroyed by a fire on Friday, June 2 — the likely suspect a bolt of lightning.

“For a lot of folks its a death in the family, for folks who have gone through life milestones here from baptisms to weddings to funerals, it’s devastating,” said Rev. Dr. Bruce MacLeod told 7 News Boston.

This is the second time the church has been burned down. In 1862, the original church was destroyed by fire and was later rebuilt.

The original church of the congregation was built in 1743.

After the fire on Friday, a lone chimney stood in the 1862 building, with a beam across it in the shape of a cross.

“That gives me hope that we’ll be back,” one woman said to 7 News Boston.
