Jay McMahon Wins GOP State Senate Primary

Jay McMahon of Bourne won the Republican primary for the vacant Plymouth & Barnstable District of the Massachusetts Senate on Tuesday.

McMahon, a lawyer who ran for Attorney General in 2018 against Maura Healey, defeated Jesse Brown of Plymouth, 56 to 44 percent, according to The Cape Cod Times.

McMahon will face Susan Moran, a Falmouth selectman who won the Democratic primary, in a special election set for Tuesday, March 31.

Moran in the primary on Tuesday, March 3 narrowly beat John Mahoney Jr., a Plymouth selectman, by 27 to 26.2 percent, followed by Thomas Moakley of West Falmouth (20.6 percent), Becky Coletta of Pembroke (20.3 percent), and Stephen Michael Palmer of Plymouth (5.9 percent), according to The Cape Cod Times.

Republicans currently hold only four of the 40 seats in the Massachusetts Senate. The Plymouth & Barnstable District was most recently held by Vinny deMacedo, a Republican from Plymouth, who resigned to take a job at Bridgewater State University.
