Joe Biden Pulls Off Upset in Maine

March 4, 2020

The polls beforehand indicated otherwise, but former Vice President Joe Biden ended up winning Maine on Super Tuesday.

The Democratic presidential candidate had 34.1 percent of the vote with 98 percent of votes reported. Shortly behind him was Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders with 32.9 percent, as Politico reports. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren finished in a distant third place (15.7 percent).

Biden also came out victorious in Massachusetts while Sanders took Vermont.

Polling in Maine prior to Tuesday’s race did not indicate Maine was in play for Biden. In fact, he had not done any campaigning there this year.

A poll put out by Colby College late last month showed Sanders (25 percent) leading the race by nine points with former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (16 percent) behind him in the race. Meanwhile, Biden (12 percent) was fourth in the poll. But Biden enjoyed a push right before Super Tuesday, including endorsements by recent rivals Buttigieg and former Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar.
