Maine Governor Sending National Guard Helicopter To Mexico Border

Maine Governor Paul LePage is bucking the trend in New England by sending a National Guard helicopter and two pilots to help defend the American border with Mexico.

LePage, a Republican and a supporter of President Donald Trump, is the only one of the four Republican governors in New England to lend support to border enforcement in the wake of the separation of children from parents trying to get into the United States illegally, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The Trump administration has stepped up enforcement of immigration laws at the border, leading to increases in detentions and thus increases in separation of parents and children being detained, which has led to widespread outrage in the country.

On Wednesday night Trump signed an executive order calling for parents and children to be kept together while in detention “where appropriate and consistent with law and available resources,” but it’s unclear what effect the order will have.
