Maine Native To Play First Transgender Superhero on Television

Nicole Maines, a biological male who identifies as a woman,  successfully sued the school district in Orono, Maine in 2014 when the school district wouldn’t allow Maines to use the girls bathroom.

Now 21, Maines is set to appear as the first transgender superhero on television. Maines plays the role of Nia Nal, an associate of the hero, in Supergirl on The CW network, according to the Bangor Daily News. The role begins in season four of the show, which starts airing this coming weekend.

Providing a positive role model for transgender children is important to Maines.

“First and foremost, had I had a trans superhero growing up, that would have changed the game, and so now, getting to be the trans superhero for a generation of kids is so special to me,” Maines told The Mary Sue, a web site that focuses on geek women, in August.
