Massachusetts Bill Would Ban TikTok On Government Devices

January 17, 2023

Should Massachusetts ban TikTok on government employees’ work cell phones?

State Representative Michael Soter (R-Bellingham) thinks so. He filed a bill (HD.260) last week in hopes of banning the app from state government devices in the Commonwealth.

Soter said he filed the bill because he does not trust Byte Dance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, to not hand over data to the Chinese government.

“The Chinese government really doesn’t want to cooperate,” Soter told Spectrum News. “We cooperate with Facebook and Twitter. I’m all for it, I hope my colleagues join me. I hope I see more folks giving me calls. I’m getting very few calls from people saying I don’t understand, but I’m getting more saying it’s about time to take a stand.”

No action has been taken on the bill yet.
