March 12, 2020

Coronavirus has now made its way into the sports world.

The Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, New England Revolution, and NCAA Division 1 college athletic programs like Boston University, Holy Cross, and Harvard will not be playing anytime soon, as CBS Sports reports.

On Wednesday night, the NBA announced its season would be suspended after Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz tested positive for the coronavirus. On Thursday, many other sports leagues began taking similar precautions.

Both the NHL and Major League Baseball announced they would be suspending their seasons for the time being. Since baseball is in its preseason, that means the start of the regular season may be delayed.

Major League Soccer, which includes the Revolution play, suspended its season for 30 days.

At the collegiate level, both the Ivy League–which Harvard is a part of –and the Patriot League –which features Holy Cross and Boston University — announced they would be cancelling the remaining portions of their spring sports seasons.

Boston College has announced on Thursday, March 12 that the school plans to continue holding spring sports events, but without spectators beyond staff and some family members, according to The Heights, the undergraduate newspaper.
